The Biggest Loser 9 Week 6 2/9/10 Episode Recap

February 12th, 2010 · No Comments

Ali announces that the contestants will be going to the Olympic training center in Colorado this week, to train alongside the athletes. She also informs them that they are now competing as individuals and that the teams are dissolved; not only that, but two players will be eliminated. The lowest person will be below a red line and is automatically sent home; then two more are below the yellow line and one will be voted off. Everyone will be eating at the training center cafeteria, where all the meals have nutritional information posted.

Ali meets the contestants for a pop challenge. She says like an Olympian they’ll need to simply push harder than everyone else. They’re joined by J. R. Celski, who tells them that on the last day of the trials, he put his skate blade into his leg; he shows them a large scar on his leg from the injury. The contestants will need to use a slide board and go back and forth 500 times.

There will be three prizes – gold, silver and bronze – but what the prizes are isn’t revealed. O’neal, Darrell, and Miggy have to sit out because of medical problems. The slide board is very slippery and most of the contestants fall down, some multiple times. Melissa is in the lead with Sam in second and closing. As they approach 500 they are literally neck and neck. Melissa falls at 492 and Sam wins gold followed shortly by Melissa with silver. Sunshine is in third place followed by Lance, with Lance closing fast, but she holds on to win bronze by three points.

Next the contestants go to the Garden of the Gods for their challenge. Kelly Underkofler, a biathlon/cross country para-Olympian, is there to help out. The contestants will run around a track and then they get to take a shot with a laser gun at a target – they choose another contestant for their shot. When a person gets five lights on, they’re out. Sunshine as bronze gets one free “shot” before the contest starts, Melissa gets to choose two points, and Sam gets to give out three. Sunshine gives one to Sam and Melissa gives both of hers to Sam, so Sam gives them equal points back. The winner of the challenge will get immunity. A bunch of people go after Lance right at the start and take him out; Melissa gets taken out next and then Miggy and Daris, followed by Michael, Andrea, Sunshine, Koli, and Sam. Stephanie and Cheryl are out, leaving O’neal, Darrell, and Ashley. O’neal and Darrell are the final two, with Darrell trying to run to catch up on the last lap. They line up together, and O’neal gets the shot off first winning immunity.

The contestants return to LA for the last chance workout and the weigh in. O’neal starts and loses 8 pounds, even with immunity. Michael is next and he’s going for his 17 pounds to get the record; he loses 11, so he doesn’t claim the record, but he does get double digits. Stephanie loses 4 pounds and Sunshine gets 6. Koli loses 9 and is safe, and Andrea gets the necessary 7 and is safe. Darrell loses 5 and falls at the bottom of the list so far. Sam loses 12 and falls below 300 pounds – a weight he hasn’t seen since he was 15 years old. Sherry loses 3 pounds, barely beating Darrell but coming in second to last so far. Ashley is concerned after seeing her mom’s weight, but she gets the 6 pounds needed for her to be safe. Daris with 9 pounds (20.81% to date) continues to be the top contestant overall and is once again safe. Cheryl’s loss of 3 puts her second to last. Miggy loses 7 and breaks the 200 pound barrier—and she’s also in second place for the week. Darrell at this point is definitely up for elimination, and only red team is left. Lance loses 9 pounds and is in fourth place for the week.

Melissa will need 3 pounds to beat Darrell or 4 pounds to be safe. She says she’s nervous and “can’t figure out her body,” continuing her claim of innocence from weeks 2 and 3. She ends up gaining one pound, curses, and falls below the red line. Melissa tells everyone that “at least I get to see my kids,” and since she’s closer to her goal weight than any of the others it’s okay for her to go home. She begs the others to keep Lance there until he weighs less than 250.

Darrell and Cheryl are up for elimination, but Ali now informs the contestants that with the Olympics, there’s no voting. Instead, Cheryl and Darrell will go head to head in an elimination challenge, with the loser going home. For the challenge, their job is to keep their Olympic torch “lit” by balancing a large torch stem on their heads, pushed up against the bottom of the flame cauldron. They have to squat to be in the right position and Darrell looks very uncomfortable compared to Cheryl after five minutes. The show cuts to a “To be continued…” message and we go to the wrap up with Melissa. Melissa checks in later and she’s down to 175 pounds, a loss of 58 pounds. She’s looking quite fit and happy. She has now taken up boxing and has her kids come with her to the gym. She tells us that her struggles on the scale were real and that people just need to give it time if they have similar struggles. Her goal weight is 145 pounds.
