July 20th, 2009 · No Comments

In a worldwide exclusive, NBC News’ Meredith Vieira will sit down with Susan Boyle in her first interview since she became an instant global phenomenon on “Britain’s Got Talent.” The exclusive interview will air on “Today” with an extended interview as part of a special edition of “America’s Got Talent” Wednesday, July 22 (9-10 p.m. ET), which will also feature the last round of auditions before heading into the live quarterfinals.

Boyle shocked the world this year with her incredible voice on the British version of the hit NBC series “America’s Got Talent. She has not spoken out about her experience to anyone until now. Boyle will talk to Vieira about her improbable journey to international fame, her voice, and what is next for her.

EXCERPTS:

MEREDITH VIEIRA:
You really were, in a sense, plucked from obscurity, although this has been a dream you’ve wanted for a long time.

SUSAN BOYLE:
It’s a long time– 23 years. I don’t have to dream anymore, and I’m glad to be given this opportunity to get back into practice.

MEREDITH VIEIRA:
23 years, you’ve wanted to have this kind of a singing career?

SUSAN BOYLE:
23 years. That’s– that’s a lifetime, and it’s something that I’m glad, through “Britain’s Got Talent,” that I’ve been able to do.

*****

MEREDITH VIEIRA:
Was that overwhelming for you, because as you said before, you come from basic obscurity. It is a dream you’ve wanted. But in a matter of days, because of the power of the Internet, people know your name. People are talking about you.

SUSAN BOYLE:
It’s a lot like a giant demolition ball.

MEREDITH VIEIRA:
It felt like a demolition ball?

SUSAN BOYLE:
The impact, like a demolition ball. You know, and– anyone who has that kind of impact– finds it really hard to get a head around it. I’ve got to be honest here. I guess I had to get my head around it, but through the– the guidance of a great team, and they are very good, I was able to see that in perspective and really turn that around a little.

*****

MEREDITH VIEIRA:
And you said that to build your confidence - I know you’ve talked about this in the past - that as a little kid, it wasn’t always easy for you.

SUSAN BOYLE:
It wasn’t easy for me as a little kid, no, because I got ridiculed in school. You always get that from your peers, anyway. I’m the type of person that just couldn’t stand up for herself very well, but I– I got over it. I’m getting over it now.

MEREDITH VIEIRA:
So was music then, for you, or singing for you sort of an outlet?

SUSAN BOYLE:
I think it was a kind of, yeah, an emotional outlet.

*****

MEREDITH VIEIRA:
You look gorgeous.

SUSAN BOYLE:
Thank you very much.

MEREDITH VIEIRA:
I’m loving the hair.

SUSAN BOYLE:
(LAUGHTER)

MEREDITH VIEIRA:
It’s a little bit different, right? You’ve had a little bit of a slight little makeover.

SUSAN BOYLE:
Yeah. Just a slight one– I brush up quite well.

*****

MEREDITH:
Are you having a good time?

SUSAN BOYLE:
I’m having a wonderful time.

MEREDITH VIEIRA:
Tell me about it.

SUSAN BOYLE:
It’s just been unbelievable. It’s indescribable. It’s a bit like– being plucked from obscurity is a bit like, you know, going on a long journey. You don’t know what’s gonna happen. You don’t know how it’s gonna end. I don’t want it to end. It’s just incredible. It’s indescribable. It’s just really good.
