This episode of The Biggest Loser began with a temptation: the contestants are asked to stand behind a white line. The first person to cross the line would receive $5,000 but must leave the ranch. When no one takes the bait, the prize is increased to $10,000 and again to $25,000. Although the contestants are tempted (in particular Joelle), no one took the money.Throughout the episode, video clips are shown of the at-home contestants and their progress. Some are well-motivated and working hard, while others are eating foods they are not supposed to.
For this week’s challenge, the contestants were taken just off the coast for a “kayak and foot” race. Their objective was to kayak for a quarter mile and then climb to the top of a “mountain” near the beach. The winner of the race wins immunity at the weigh-in and the top four finishers win phone calls home. The contestant coming in last place receives a one-pound-penalty at the weigh-in. Tara won the competition, with Blaine coming in second, Mandi coming in third, and Helen in fourth. Mike, Damien, Kristin, Joelle, Filipe, and Jerry are the next six to finish, with Dan coming in last place. Tara gave her phone call to Filipe because she thinks it will mean more to someone with a wife and kids at home. Blaine spoke to his pregnant wife, who is due to give birth to their third child in two weeks, and she tearfully told him to stay on the ranch and she’ll be OK without him.
A large portion of this week’s episode is focused on the problems of Joelle, who appears to lack motivation and is not putting forth enough effort. At the “last chance work-out,” Bob became extremely frustrated with her, because she kept getting off the treadmill, and he yelled at her at some length. Joelle acknowledged all of the criticism, but could not seem to work out harder. Jillian was amused to see Bob angry, and stated that she has never seen Bob get this mad. Later, Bob said he was “channeling Jillian Michaels.”
At the weigh-in, Tara lost only one pound, but since she won the challenge, she is safe from elimination. The Black team (Blaine and Dane) had the largest percentage of weight loss (4.04%). Jerry and Dan were both below the yellow line after losing one and three pounds respectively. The one-pound penalty Dan earned at the challenge was critical in that without the penalty it would have been Joelle, who only lost 2 pounds, up for elimination instead. The contestants deliberate together. They found it difficult to vote off either Jerry or Dan, as they feel both really need to be at the Ranch. But they ultimately agreed that Dan needed it more, as he is a young man who has had a serious problem all his life, while Jerry has the support of his wife, and used to be thin, so can get back to that state. After an hour of deliberation and many tears, Jerry was sent home after the first five votes uncovered are all for him.
At home, Jerry feels better and has seen dramatic improvements in his health and energy levels; he no longer suffers from diabetes. He has lost 84 pounds and hopes to lose at least 160 by the finale. Estella is under 200 pounds.
